Advanced Technology’s Role in B&T Steel’s Fabrication Processes
Advanced Tech Drives Efficiency in Steel Fabrication
With its origins tracing back to the early steel makers who discovered that carbon added to iron at high temperatures produced steel, steel fabrication has become increasingly sophisticated, driven by several technological advancements and innovations. From the precision of 3D modelling and BIM (Building Information Modelling) to the efficiency of robotics and automation, innovations continue to improve how steel structures are designed, produced, and assembled.
While advances in materials and coatings have boosted the integrity and durability of steel structures and components, sustainable practices in steel construction are setting new standards for environmental responsibility.
Here, we explore how B&T Steel leverages advanced technology to revolutionise steel fabrication in sub-Saharan Africa.
A Model for Excellence: Unmatched Precision and Efficiency in Steel Fabrication
Founded in 1995 in Delmas, Mpumalanga, the business is brimming with industry knowledge and diverse expertise, with a skilled team committed to ongoing innovation, never shying from charting new paths or utilising advancing technologies.
Precision Modelling Tools for Detailed Visualisation
B&T Steel’s design and detailing team blends deep expertise in building dynamics with cutting-edge tools like CAD, structural modelling software, BIM, and advanced project planning methods. This combination helps our team tackle challenges such as tricky site conditions and complex foundations while ensuring structural integrity.
We use Tekla Structures for precise 3D modelling, which streamlines the detailing of our steel structures. With Tekla, we can model more quickly through intelligent and parametric modelling, perform clash detection and resolution, generate detailed drawings for every stage, deliver precise manufacturing data, and manage production and delivery schedules.
Additionally, Tekla enables the creation of 4D visualisations and task scheduling on-site, all of which contribute to more streamlined and cost-efficient projects. Tekla’s open BIM approach integrates seamlessly with B&T Steel’s production planning systems, preventing delays and ensuring timely delivery of the right steel elements.
Full Automation for Increased Productivity
Using world leading Kaltenbach CNC cutting, drilling and measuring machines, the company reaps enormous savings from producing double the volume with the same labour force. Our fully automated Kaltenbach steel processing systems enable us to process steel more efficiently, improve productivity, reduce man-hours, minimise waste and avoid costly production errors. Spanning 12,000m² on an 8-hectare site, B&T Steel’s plant boasts the capacity to fabricate 400 tons of light/medium structural steel and 600 tons of heavy structural steel every month.
Energy Efficient Technology for Greener Processing
Choosing Kaltenbach, a world leader in steel processing technologies, for machines and systems has rushed B&T Steel to the forefront of steel fabrication solutions in sub-Saharan Africa.
Kaltenbach’s robust and exceptionally efficient machines prioritise environmental friendliness and maximise uptime – key considerations for us with our base in energy-constrained South Africa, which is regularly plagued by electricity load shedding and outages.
Optimising Projects and Reducing Costs for Clients: The Benefits of Advanced Technology in Steel Fabrication
By leveraging advanced technologies, we have driven down running costs, doubled production, and enhanced energy performance. At the same time, embracing advancing tech enables us to meet our client’s expectations for better cost control, greater customisation and improved environmental sustainability.

The Future of Steel Fabrication: B&T Steel Looks Ahead
We believe the future of steel fabrication will be shaped by heightened demand for sustainability and customisation. Although intensively competitive, the steel fabrication market in South Africa is growing, spurred by high demand for custom metal structures.
While advancing technologies offer faster production, lower environmental impact, and more tailored solutions, some challenges remain. Industry players, especially smaller fabricators, face issues like skills gaps, high initial costs for new machinery, and the need to adapt to rapid technological changes. The caveat is that staying ahead in technology adoption provides competitive advantages and opens new business opportunities.
Our strategic investment in advanced technologies allows us to deliver projects more efficiently and sustainably, providing our clients with cost-effective, turnkey solutions and a reduced environmental footprint. This not only aligns with the values of clients who prioritise both financial and ecological concerns but also strengthens B&T Steel’s competitive edge in the steel fabrication industry.
